As an environmental psychologist, I have been involved in research examining the mental health impacts of climate change. In one study, we surveyed residents of a coastal community that had experienced multiple flooding events due to rising sea levels. We found that these individuals had significantly higher levels of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than residents of a control community that had not experienced flooding. The study also revealed that the more exposure to flooding a person had, the more severe their mental health symptoms.
In another study, we conducted focus groups with farmers in the Midwest who were experiencing firsthand the effects of climate change, such as extreme heat, drought, and flooding.
