During my postdoctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley, I conducted a multi-year study examining the impact of natural environments on individuals recovering from surgery. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three recovery conditions: (1) a standard hospital room, (2) a hospital room with a view of nature, or (3) a hospital room with access to a nature-based intervention (e.g., a nature walk or gardening). Results indicated that individuals in the nature-exposure conditions experienced less pain and anxiety, required less pain medication, and had shorter hospital stays than those in the control condition.
