I have had the opportunity to utilize music therapy in a school setting, specifically working with children with special needs. In one particular case, I was working with a child diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who struggled with social interactions and emotional regulation.
To address these challenges, I designed a group music therapy program that incorporated various musical activities to target specific goals. One of the activities involved using percussion instruments to facilitate social interaction and turn-taking skills. By creating a structured musical environment, the child was able to engage with peers and practice taking turns, which helped improve their social skills and ability to interact with others.
Another technique I used was songwriting. I encouraged the child to express their emotions through creating lyrics and melodies.
