Functional communication training (FCT) is a behavioral intervention used to teach individuals new, appropriate ways to communicate their needs and wants, thereby reducing the likelihood of problem behaviors. I have extensive experience using FCT with individuals of all ages, including those with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and developmental delays.
In one instance, I worked with a young child who engaged in frequent tantrums and aggression. Through observation and data collection, I identified that the child’s tantrums were typically triggered by frustration when they were unable to communicate their needs effectively. I implemented an FCT intervention that involved teaching the child to use sign language to request desired items or activities. Over time, the child’s tantrums decreased significantly, as they were now able to communicate their needs appropriately.
