Through my years as a Marriage and Family Therapist, I’ve had the privilege of supporting couples and families impacted by mental illness. These experiences have been deeply impactful, both for the individuals and myself as a therapist.
One memorable case involved a couple navigating the challenges of one partner living with bipolar disorder. Their relationship had been strained by the episodes of mania and depression, as well as the stigma and misunderstanding that often accompanies mental illness. Through empathetic listening, psychoeducation, and cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, we explored the impact of the disorder on their relationship and developed coping strategies. The couple gained a deeper understanding of the challenges and learned to support each other during emotional fluctuations.
In another instance, I worked with a family grappling with the aftermath of a loved one’s addiction.
